your first visit

What To Expect During Your First Appointment

Your first visit is designed to understand your goals, movement patterns, and what may be limiting your progress—not simply identify a symptom. Every appointment begins with conversation and assessment so we can create a plan focused on helping you move better, recover fully, and build long-term confidence.

Your First Visit Includes:

1. Conversation & Goal Setting
We'll discuss your symptoms, injury history, activity level, goals, and anything affecting your movement or daily life.
2. Movement & Physical Assessment
We'll evaluate mobility, strength, posture, movement patterns, and contributing factors to better understand what's driving the issue.
3. Treatment & Personalized Plan
Treatment may begin the same day and can include hands-on care, movement retraining, rehab exercises, and recommendations to keep you progressing between visits.
Common questions

Answers Before Your First Visit

Learn more about what to expect at Ascent Health & Performance, including care options, insurance questions, and how we help active Alaskans stay strong.

Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?
+

No. Most patients can begin care without a referral. If additional imaging, specialist involvement, or coordination with another provider would be helpful, we'll guide you through the process.

How is physical therapy different from chiropractic care?
+

Physical therapy at Ascent focuses heavily on movement quality, progressive strengthening, rehabilitation, and building long-term function. Chiropractic care often focuses more on restoring motion, reducing pain, and addressing movement restrictions. Our providers collaborate closely, and many patients benefit from a combination of both depending on their goals.

What should I wear to my appointment?
+

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. Athletic clothing and clean gym shoes are ideal, especially if movement testing or exercise is expected.

How many visits will I need?
+

Every patient is different. Some people improve quickly in just a few visits, while others recovering from surgery or chronic injuries may benefit from a longer progression. Your goals, activity level, and condition all help determine recommendations.

Will I get exercises to do at home?
+

Yes. Home exercises are individualized and designed to reinforce what you're doing in the clinic. The goal isn't to overwhelm you with dozens of exercises—it's to give you high-value strategies that keep you progressing between visits.

Do you treat athletes only?
+

Not at all. We work with active adults, desk workers, weekend warriors, post-surgical patients, and athletes of all levels. Whether your goal is hiking in Alaska, lifting weights, or simply moving through daily life more comfortably, care is tailored to you.

Can I transition from physical therapy into personal training?
+

Yes. Many patients continue progressing after rehab through one-on-one coaching or training. The goal is helping you maintain momentum and continue building strength, confidence, and resilience long after symptoms improve.

Do you accept insurance?
+

We currently accept Premera BCBS and Aetna. Cash-based options and superbills are also available for patients who prefer direct-pay care.
